Fort Davis Scenic Loop – TX-166

TX-166 scenic loop that starts south of Fort Davis is a nice and relaxing ride.  There are some curves to make it interesting but TX-166 it is not a difficult ride.   The road surface is in good condition most of the way.  The scenery is great, lots of mountains that makes one feel very small.  TX-166 ends at TX-118 north of Fort Davis and ~15 mi north of the McDonald’s Observatory.  TX-118 heading back to Fort Davis has a bumpy road surface with plenty of curves; the bumpiness prevents a fun ride.  But, once TX-118 bends around to the observatory the road surface smooths out and the curves and grade become more challenging.  It is really a 15-mile fun ride on a sports bike back to Fort Davis from the observatory.  We have ridden this 15-mile portion back and about 20 X since we have been staying in Fort Davis because it is so much fun.  The detailed description of the route is shown below:

Fort Davis Scenic Loop – TX-166 – 75 mi

South on State St / TX-17/ TX-118 in Fort Davis.  Go ~0.1 mi.

Right onto TX-17 S/ State St.  Go 2.3 mi.

Right onto TX-166 N.  Go 43.0 mi.

Right onto TX-118 S.  Go 29.4 mi back to Fort Davis.
